Tottenham beating Arsenal to land this PL speedster would cover a big area of weakness

Why Tottenham Hotspur should beat Arsenal to sign Joe Gomez

According to an exclusive by 90Min (h/t The Sun), Arsenal and Tottenham are preparing an offer for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez – provided the 22-year-old decides to leave Anfield during the winter transfer window.

As per the report, Gomez is unhappy with his game time under Jurgen Klopp this season. He wants to leave the Reds in search of regular first-team football after recovering from a long-time injury.

Gomez has made just three Premier League appearances this season with just one start.

Since his full 90-minute appearance against Norwich City, he has played just six minutes in the last two appearances. Even though the Reds managed to win all three games he has featured in, his contribution was very minimal.

Gomez has made just two tackles with a 50% tackle success rate and has conceded a goal too. He has made five recoveries, won six duels and has lost three. However, his stats for this season show very less of his quality and potential.

In the previous Premier League season, he made 16 appearances, winning 13 of those and losing none. He made 17 tackles with a 65% tackle success rate. His versatility of playing as a full-back and centre-back helped him become a regular starter but an injury ruled him out of the rest of the season, with Joel Matip taking his place.

As far as Tottenham are concerned, they failed to replace Kieran Trippier, who left the London club to join La Liga giants Atletico Madrid. Pochettino has already tried three players to fill the gap but none has performed to the expectations so far.

The Argentine manager provided chances to Kyle Walker-Peters at the beginning of the season and even though his mediocre performances showed some potential, an injury ruled him out after three games.

Serge Aurier was the second player to fill the position and he impressed in his first league appearance, providing two assists. A red card against Southampton led to Pochettino utilizing defensive midfielder Moussa Sissoko at right-back.

Aurier is currently the first-choice right-back and that’s only because the Lilywhites are out of options.

Gomez is just 22 and can be a long-time option for the London club. His versatility can also be utilized, as Jan Vertonghen is in his last year of contract with the club.
