Tottenham recalling their £10m rising starlet would be a masterstroke by Mourinho

Why Tottenham must recall Jack Clarke from loan spell

According to Sky Sports, Tottenham are planning to recall Jack Clarke form his unsuccessful loan spell at Elland Road.

Clarke, 19, came through the ranks of Leeds United’s youth system and was picked by Tottenham for £10m last summer. Former manager Mauricio Pochettino allowed the youngster to return to his boyhood club on loan, but the report suggests that Jose Mourinho wants to have a look at his game.

The teenager enjoyed a good time last season as he made 25 appearances for the Whites and lighted up the Championship as one of Marcelo Bielsa’s most promising players in the 2018/19 season. In the process, he scored twice as Leeds finished in the play-offs.

His bright performances put him on the radar of Tottenham. After switching sides, he hasn’t got enough chances at Elland Road and he has played only one Championship game so far.

As a result of that, Jose Mourinho will first recall him and after his showing in the training sessions, it will be decided whether to keep him or send him out on loan again.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have bounced back to life after what was an unsatisfactory season under Pochettino. Mourinho’s arrival has changed the fortunes in the ongoing season and they are looking to get better with every game.

They have lost just one of the games in the Premier League under the Portuguese and are hoping to break into the top four at the earliest. They are just 3 points behind Chelsea, who are occupying the final Champions League spot.

With plenty of tougher games to come, Mourinho would be hoping that his players are fit enough to carry the momentum to finish the season in a good position. The issue with the Lilywhites is that they have just three wingers in total.

Son Heung-Min is doing exceptionally well on the left and Lucas Moura has made his chance count on the right. Erik Lamela has been prone to injury since his arrival. He looks to be good when fit but that has been reduced to a specific number of games every season.

In that case, Jack Clarke would add some depth to the squad and he would be a better fit on the left. He has shown his quality and with game time, he can develop into a good player.

He might be too young to fill the place of the three established wingers available at Mourinho’s disposal but he might just be the perfect one to come on from the bench and display some meaningful cameos at the end of a game.

Verdict

The right decision for Tottenham would be to exercise the option of recalling him in the winter because a player of his quality must not be wasted on the bench. He would also be experienced by that time and can be pivotal to their attack in the near future.
