Why Tottenham must splash the cash and sign Marco Asensio in January

Tottenham Hotspur have made a mixed start under Mauricio Pochettino after picking up 3 wins and 2 losses in their opening 5 games of the season. Though the Lilywhites have been downed by Watford and Liverpool, they have looked confident and cohesive under the Argentinian this season.

The London club became the first team across Europe’s top five leagues to not make a single transfer during the summer transfer window. Pochettino did seem happy with his current crop of players and didn’t feel the need to add to his squad.

But according to Deportivo Mundo, Tottenham missed the chance to sign Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio in 2014. Pochettino had the chance to sign the young Spaniard before his value shot up but opted against it.

Asensio has since won 2 Champions League titles with Real Madrid and the club have slammed a £442million release clause in his contract. (Deportivo Mundo)

Marco Asensio

Asensio is a devastating winger who poses all sorts of problems in the opposition half. The youngster can dribble, run at defenders, shoot from anywhere on the pitch and act as an able provider for the squad.

After enjoying loan spells with Mallorca and Espanyol, Asensio returned to Real Madrid as a new man. Since breaking out under former manager Zinedine Zidane, Asensio has been one of the most prolific players for the Blancos.

He scored in the Champions League and La Liga last season and will be aiming to hit new heights this time out.

Asensio has so far picked up 3 assists in 4 games this season. He was also in stellar form for Spain as the youngster scored 1 goal and provided 3 assists in just 1 game during the international break.

The 22-year-old seems to be rising at a rapid pace and this is exactly why Spurs should go back for the winger in January. There’s no doubt he is one of the most coveted young talents in the world. According to the report, Barcelona were also interested in snapping up the Spaniard.

Mauricio Pochettino should definitely make a move for Asensio in January. He will certainly not come cheap, but if Tottenham intend to show some ambition, they must splash the cash on Asensio.
