Tottenham hijacking Everton’s plans to land this on-loan star would sort out their midfield in the summer

Tottenham opinion: Should Spurs sign Andre Gomes?

According to a report from the Sun, Tottenham are looking at the possibility of hijacking Everton’s move to sign Andre Gomes on a permanent deal.

The Portuguese international has been on loan at the Goodison Park from Barcelona since the start of the season and has impressed with performances.

Tottenham, who are yet to fill the void left by Mousa Dembele after his departure to China in January, are looking to make a move of their own in the summer as Barcelona look to offload him permanently at the end of his loan deal.

The Premier League duo aren’t the only ones in the bid to sign Gomes, with Serie A giants Inter Milan also showing interest in the 25-year-old. Tottenham should step up their effort to sign the Portuguese international this summer and he would be a brilliant fit under Mauricio Pochettino.

Gomes missed the first 8 games of this Premier League season due to a muscle injury but has since played every game for the Toffees so far this season. He has been a solid presence this season and despite a small dip in form recently, he is still a valuable asset to the squad.

Since the departure of Dembele a couple of months ago, Spurs have been massively hurt due to injuries.

The absence of the likes of Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama left a massive hole in Pochettino’s squad, which resulted in them bowing out of the title race. They are now under the threat of falling out of the top four too.

The addition of Gomes would give Pochettino a lot of options in the midfield and thanks to the Portuguese man’s versatility, Spurs’ midfield will have a lot of depth and could comfortably cope with if there were to be any injuries.

A calm and composed figure in the midfield, Gomes’ brilliant range of passing would be of massive help to the Spurs side and his through balls will be fed upon brilliantly by the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.

His driving runs through the middle of the park into the attacking third will improve Tottenham’s attacking force further and could cause serious damage to the opposition.

Gomes would also bring in a sense of authority and leadership to the Spurs midfield and would act as an experienced head next to youngsters like Harry Winks and Eric Dier.

Conclusion

Having failed to sign a single player in the last two transfer windows, Spurs will need to go hard in the summer especially if they lose their star midfielder, Christian Eriksen.

Gomes, although not as influential as the Dane, would help soften the blow if Eriksen does decide to leave and Spurs shouldn’t think twice about making the move in the summer.
