Tottenham signing this physical 26-year-old would get them a perfect long-term partner for Sanchez

Tottenham opinion: Should Pochettino sign Omar Colley?

According to Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur and Mauricio Pochettino have accepted defeat in their attempt to convince star defender Toby Alderweireld to extend his contract with the club.

The Belgian, thanks to a clause in his contract, will be available for as little as £26million in the summer. Manchester United are leading the race to sign the centre-back with the likes of Juventus and Barcelona also interested in Alderweireld.

So one player who Spurs should target from the Serie A as Alderweireld’s replacement is Omar Colley.

The Gambian moved to Sampdoria at the start of the season from Belgian side Genk after two impressive seasons there. A versatile defender who can play both at centre-back and left-back, Colley would be a fantastic addition to Spurs’ backline and especially next to Davinson Sanchez.

Very similar to Sanchez, Colley is a strong, quick and no-nonsense defender who has been highly impressive in the Serie A this season. The 26-year-old started off the season mostly on the bench but has only missed two games since Christmas.

The Gambian initially attracted interest from Southampton among other Premier League clubs in 2016 but a move failed to materialise.

However, his performances for Genk both in the heart of defence and on the left-hand side made his value go up as he became the most expensive Gambian when he moved to Sampdoria in the summer.

One of Colley’s biggest strengths is his ability to read the game. He very rarely rushes his decisions and is always calm and collected in his moves on the pitch. His pace helps him cover the ground quickly and his physicality is something that the opposition attackers would look to stay away from.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Colley’s height is one of his biggest assets and he is a monster in aerial duels. The 26-year-old’s ability in set-pieces is outstanding and he is a constant threat in the opposition box.

Colley averages 1.1 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 3.2 successful aerial duels and a staggering 5.2 clearances per game in the Serie A so far this season. The former Genk man is a solid passer of the ball as well, averaging 2.3 long balls and 55 passes per game with a very impressive accuracy of 89%. (WhoScored)

Conclusion

With Alderweireld set to leave in the summer and with Jan Vertonghen turning 32 next month, Tottenham have to address their centre-back issue in the summer and Omar Colley would be a fantastic addition to the squad.

The Gambian would form a fantastic partnership with Davinson Sanchez and would take Tottenham’s defence to the next level. Mauricio Pochettino should seriously consider the option of signing Colley in the summer.
