Comparing Man United’s top targets: Analysis shows £27m star would be a better bet than £86m sensation

Why Werner over Haaland could be a great signing for Man United

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for two youngsters in Timo Werner and Erling Haaland. According to Mirror, both Werner and Haaland have been the top targets for the Red Devils as a result of their exploits with RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg respectively. While Haaland is rated at £86m, Werner has a release clause of just £27m.

The Red Devils have struggled for consistency this season and the main reason for this is their inability to find the back of the net. After offloading Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan in the summer and sending Alexis Sanchez on loan to San Siro, they failed to reinforce their front line.

With just two strikers in the likes of youngsters Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood, Manchester United are not productive in front of goal.

According to Daily Mail, the United boss could be ready to splash £300million in order to tie up several big signings to bolster their attack.

If Manchester United are interested in spending big when the transfer window opens in January, they must look to sign highly-rated German international Timo Werner instead of going for Erling Haaland.

Timo Werner

The 23-year-old German has had a wonderful season with RB Leipzig and is already making great forward strides in his career. He has also been the first-choice striker for the German national side since his debut for them in March 2017.

In the Bundesliga this season, Werner has started in all 10 games so far. He has found the back of the net 9 times and has 3 assists to his name.

Timo Werner’s strength is his ability to link up with players around him. Despite starting his career as a right-winger, he has established himself as a centre-forward in a two-man striker system. This has allowed him to link up with his partners and become more effective.

Known for his speed, Werner’s versatility has been of immense help for both RB Leipzig and the German national team. He is also known for his dribbling skills.

Werner’s level of experience at a very young age can be helpful to Manchester United, who are without any firepower in their attacking system. The Red Devils can benefit and become more lethal with the partnership of Rashford and Werner if the latter arrives at Manchester.

Erling Haaland

The Norwegian teenager broke into the scene with his performances in the Champions League making him the youngest to score in all first four matches of the tournament. Seven goals in four matches is no mean feat and Haaland has scored against the likes of Liverpool and Napoli this season.

The 19-year-old ace has been in top form for RB Salzburg this season after scoring 11 times in 12 games so far for the Austrian outfit.

One of the hottest young talents across Europe, Haaland will be eyeing to make a move to Manchester United as they have shown interest in him after his breakthrough this season, as reported in the Mirror.

Although he has played under Solskjaer at Molde FK, it would not be the right choice for United to make a move at this point as he hasn’t proved himself for a consistent period of time yet.

Verdict

It would be ideal for Solskjaer to sign Timo Werner as he is the most in-form striker at the moment and he also has the experience to play at a higher level. Meanwhile, Erling Haaland has just risen to the occasion and maybe after a year or two, he can match the expectations of a top club.
