22 goals in 29 games: West Brom must blindly sign this in-form Greek international to patch up their weaknesses

West Brom opinion: Should the Baggies sign Efthymios Koulouris?

West Brom may not look like a team in trouble and yet, their board sacked manager Darren Moore despite the fact that the club are in fourth place. At the moment, they are seven points behind third-placed Sheffield United but six points above fifth-placed Middlesbrough. The Baggies are very likely to finish in the top six.

And despite all the positives that fans can look towards, West Brom have more than their fair share of issues.

The performances of both Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez have patched up the holes that the team has, with both forwards together contributing to 33 league goals. That makes up for 68% of the 48 goals the club has scored so far, and Gayle is on loan.

Their defence is in decent shape, their midfield has just two players below the age of thirty and only Jonathan Leko is a bonafide long-term option. Not to mention that 36-year-old Wesley Hoolahan still plays regularly despite him struggling to cope with the Championship’s gruelling schedule.

The summer window will prove to be a solace for whoever comes in next, but one man who should be on their shortlist is Efthymios Koulouris. The 23-year-old is a centre-forward, and with Dwight Gayle’s loan spell with the club expiring at the end of the season, the Baggies will need another one.

What makes Koulouris a great option for West Brom is not the fact that he’s a consistent goal-scorer but his tenacity. Goalscorers are a dime a dozen and while Efthymios Koulouris has netted 22 goals in 29 appearances this season, it wouldn’t have been possible without his tenacity.

Barely 6 foot tall, the Greek international is a work horse, who is forever after the ball, never giving opponents even a moment’s rest. This is a major part why nearly every game he’s played in has seen him come out on the winning side.

At the moment, Dwight Gayle adds the pace and tenacity up front, with Rodriguez helping out too. But injuries in his past have affected and slowed down the former Southampton man, which means that once Gayle leaves, Rodriguez would need someone who can do that.

A move for Efthymios Koulouris will easily help out with that. His strength on the ball is a key trait and he combines that with exceptional movement in and around the box. That makes Koulouris very difficult to mark, as he’s always on the move and it creates more space for others to have a pop at goal.

Conclusion

Adding someone as good as Efthymios Koulouris won’t make West Brom whole again, but it will go a long way in helping the club move forward. While they will need other additions to patch up their team, the Baggies have to make a move for Koulouris.

The Greek international is ready for a move to England and it’s a move that West Brom need to make.

Football is and always will be the beautiful game. What every child understands, yet every adult struggles to, is that it is a game that defines the nature of the universe. But that's just me.
