West Ham are in dire need of beating Rangers to sign this 23-year-old Championship ace who will be a free agent in the summer

West Ham Opinion – Why West Ham must beat Rangers in signature of Mahlon Romeo

According to a report in the Express, Scottish giants Rangers are eyeing up a move for Millwall defender Mahlon Romeo. The 23-year-old will be a free agent in the upcoming summer transfer window, hence, attracting interest from the Ibrox club.

As per the report, the right-back is tracked by few clubs in the Championship and Premier League side West Ham have been scouting him for a while now.

Romeo has had a fine season with Millwall, that has prompted clubs to keep track of him. With him being a free agent, expect more clubs to join the race once the transfer window reopens.

Here’s why West Ham must beat Rangers and any other possible contenders to the signature of the Antigua and Barbuda international:

West Ham need a quality right-back

Currently, the Hammers have Pablo Zabaleta and Ryan Fredericks as the two options for the right-back slot. But the former is now 34 years old and his contract is due to expire at the end of this season.

Furthermore, he hasn’t signed an extension yet, meaning he could well be leaving the London stadium in a few months’ time.

Hence, Manuel Pellegrini would be left with Fredericks, who was bought last summer from Fulham, but hasn’t really grabbed his place in the team. Thus, West Ham must be active in the market for a right-back.

They have been scouting Mahlon Romeo, and truth be told, he could be an ideal addition to the team. The 23-year-old has good pace to make runs up and down the pitch, he is sharp in defending and can deliver good crosses into the box.

Conclusion

West Ham’s need of a right-back is pretty apparent. They must use some of the money in getting one in the summer. From Romeo’s viewpoint, playing for a Premier League club should be more appealing when compared to a Scottish League side (with all due respect).
