Wolves plotting a January swoop for this 20-year-old midfield dynamo would be a sharp piece of business by Nuno

Why Wolves must make a January swoop for Boubakary Soumare

According to a report from the Birmingham Mail, Wolves are interested in signing Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare.

Boubakary Soumare, 20, came through the ranks at Paris Saint-Germain before leaving for Lille in the summer of 2017. He scored once in 20 league appearances last year, that goal coming in a 2-2 draw with Lyon.

The France Under-20 international’s impressive displays have caught the attention of a number of clubs from England, Spain, Italy and Germany.

He has entered the final year of his contract at Lille and the Ligue 1 outfit could cash him in the next transfer window rather losing him on a free transfer next summer. With that in mind, Wolves must go all out to land Soumare in January.

Wolves haven’t made the best start to the Premier League, despite having qualified for the Europa League. They are without a win so far in the new season and lost 3-2 to Everton in their last game before the international break.

Nuno Espirito Santo strengthened his squad over the summer but it looks like he’ll need to take a dip in the January transfer window to add some more players in a bid to break into the top six.

One area Santo should definitely address is the midfield, with Joao Moutinho having entered the twilight of his career and isn’t capable enough to continue performing at such a high level.

Besides Moutinho, Wolves do have the likes of Ruben Neves, Romain Saiss, Leander Dendoncker and Morgan Gibbs-White as options in central midfield, but Nuno could certainly use some depth in that area and Soumare would be a solid addition.

A defensive midfielder by trade, Soumare is aggressive, tenacious, strong and an able dribbler, who will allow for some ball progression.

The 20-year-old is a good passer of the ball, imaginative, can make driving runs with the ball at his feet and is capable of producing moments of pure magic. He remains calm under pressure and can play a killer pass in the final third.

The Frenchman is a prodigious talent who will improve a lot with time and maturity. He could be the man who can come in add some much-needed balance and physicality to the Wolves midfield.

Verdict

Wolves could have a gem on their hands if they manage to help Soumare fulfil his potential. Nuno’s club certainly have the financial muscle to pull off the transfer in January.

If the Wanderers succeed in doing so, they’ll be taking a step in the right direction towards a bright future.
