Why Wolves signing Yerry Mina could be a huge statement of intent

Wolverhampton Wanderers have joined the race to sign Barcelona’s Colombian centre-back Yerry Mina to further bolster their already solid defensive line. Reports suggest that the La Liga champions are ready to offload Mina after signing Clement Lenglet from Sevilla.

They’re newcomers in the Premier League but Wolves are doing business like an established top-flight club. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo has been ruthless in getting his targets this summer.

Getting Mina, either on loan or on a permanent basis, would be a major statement of intent as the Colombian was terrific in the World Cup.

Here’s everything you need to know about the player and why his addition would be brilliant to the Wolves squad:

Player Analysis – Yerry Mina

Age – 23

Main position – Central defender

Mina is a physically robust defender who can dominate centre-forwards with ease. His imperious stature and height (195cm) allow him to win aerial duels in both boxes, which is a considerable threat to the opposition during set-pieces.

The Colombian has an aerial success rate of 4.7 per game (in the World Cup) and he scored 3 goals during the showpiece event in Russia.

The 23-year-old doesn’t shy away from making a tackle or two, executing them at 1.3 and 2 per game in the World Cup and La Liga respectively. Moreover, his accurate passing from the back to set the play up is impressive as well, at a completion rate of over 89%.

Mina can be a reckless individual at times but it’s alright because it increases the competition level on the pitch and he has shown that he doesn’t walk away from challenges.

There must be a reason why Barcelona signed the player in January and if he can replicate that form at the Molineux stadium, Wolves are in for a treat.

Verdict

Analysing Mina’s attributes and witnessing what he did in Russia, there is no wonder he will be an impactful addition to any squad. Getting him would be perfect for Wolves.
