Why Wolves splashing out £34m to sign Serie A striker would be absolute madness

Should Wolverhampton Wanderers Go For Andre Silva From AC Milan?

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interested in a January move for AC Milan striker Andre Silva and a figure of €34million is what Wolves are prepared to pay. While the amount of money involved does seem big, there is no doubt it is not a major surprise. Prices have skyrocketed across leagues but while it does seem a bit far-fetched for a Championship side to splash so much on a striker, the question is if he’d be worth it.

Now, this is a player who has smashed 6 goals in as many Europa League appearances but has failed to find the back of the net even once in the Serie A. To be fair, he did not really receive as many chances to work his magic but he clearly does have the potential, as is evident from his Europa League displays. In those 6 appearances, he was also adjudged as Man Of The Match twice and that itself speaks for what Silva is capable of.

Ever since Fosun International bought the Wolves in 2016, they have been splashing money left, right and centre. Players like Ruben Neves, Helder Costa, Diogo Jota and Ivan Cavaleiro have already joined the club and with Nuno Espirito Santo at the helm of things, Wolverhampton seem to be destined for great things. While signing a new striker could help them with squad depth in the grand scheme, going for a player like Silva might prove to be tricky.

Most reports suggest that the Italian giants have rejected Wolves’ offer of €34million. Of course, there is no doubt that they can go higher, but splashing out so much money on a player who is yet to prove his mettle in the Serie A may not be the ideal move. If the club seals a promotion this season, there is no doubt that their earnings will increase but even then, a player like Silva is likely to be a risky prospect.

Make no mistake – with his potential, he could achieve great things for the Wolves and go on to become one of their key players. However, there is also the possibility that he could fail to work his magic for the Midlands side and as of now, they do not have the luxury to take that kind of a risk. Yes, they are at the top of the Championship table and they do look quite safe but nothing in the world of football can ever be taken for granted.

Currently, Wolves have the likes of Leo Bonatini and Rafa Mir and a player like Silva could provide greater depth. That said, if he goes on to perform the way he has for AC Milan in the Serie A, the club will have to deal with an expensive flop and they cannot afford to do so at a time when they are fighting to seal a promotion to the Premier League.
