Why Wolves would beat Cardiff to the EFL Championship title despite just a 3-point gap

Why Wolves Would Clinch The Championship Title Away From Cardiff City Despite 3-point Gap

Following a run of just one win in 5 league games, Wolverhampton Wanderers rather opened the door up for Cardiff City at the top of the Championship and Neil Warnock’s men have been spending their time desperately, trying to walk through it.

The Bluebirds are now unbeaten in 11 games and have won all of their last seven despite some injuries and they are doing all they can to pile the pressure on the previous runaway leaders.

The two clubs now lie only three points apart at the top of the table with a showdown between them still to come at the Cardiff City stadium on April 6th, leading to many pundits tipping Cardiff to turn things around and pinch the title from under Wolves’ nose.

What we have to bear in mind though is that a closer look at Wolves’ form during the last few weeks is better than it looks on paper. Draws against Preston and Norwich were hardly disastrous results and then there was a run of three games where vital midfield duo Ruben Neves and Romain Saiss could not play together.

Neves was banned for two games and having shouldered the burden, Saiss was rested upon Neves’ return. Wolves lost two of those 3 games but considering their slight midfield problem and the fact that two of the games were away to Fulham and Aston Villa, I wouldn’t worry about those games in the long run.

As soon as the midfield partnership was reinstated, Wolves eased to a 3-0 win against Reading and despite the early loss of Diogo Jota, they looked every inch the team we saw go many points clear at the top.

On the flipside; while Cardiff’s run has been a thing to behold, it’s one that has not quite got them to the top and simply has to end sometime. Trips to Derby, Sheffield United, Aston Villa and Norwich will all present tough problems for Neil Warnock and points will undoubtedly be dropped at some stage.

In other words, the two have come close together because of sharply contrasting fortunes over the last few weeks and in the topsy-turvy way of football life, both sides will see a further contrast. It’s easy to see Wolves grabbing maximum points from most of their games now while Cardiff would have to keep winning and go on an all-time record breaking run to stop them winning it, which is unlikely.  The title goes to Wolves.
