Why Zenit’s Leandro Paredes Would Be A Perfect Partner For Nemanja Matic At Manchester United

As per a report from Calciomercato, Manchester United have joined the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid to battle it out for Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder Leandro Paredes.

Jose Mourinho has to prioritise a massive rebuild this summer to ensure they put up a stronger title challenge next season and according to the report, Paredes has emerged as a potential target for United, who are in dire need of strengthening their midfield.

The 23-year-old joined the Russian outfit only last summer from AS Roma and has played a starring role for them ever since. A defensive midfielder by trade, Paredes has contributed a total of 4 goals and 5 assists for the club across competitions this season.

Despite being so young, Paredes possesses a mature understanding of the game and is adept at dictating terms in the middle of the park. His composure while in possession is commendable and he is particularly well known for his fantastic passing range.

At United, there is most certainly a requirement for a player like him. Michael Carrick is set to retire at the end of the season and Ander Herrera’s future remains uncertain.

That leaves Nemanja Matic as the only option in that role and we have all seen how disastrous things can get when Mourinho deploys Paul Pogba as his partner. Thus, to improve the club’s overall performances, Paredes could be the long-term solution and a much-needed midfield partner for Matic.

Both players are quite similar in their playing styles but there are also some noteworthy differences. For example, Carrick is a deep-lying midfielder proficient at passing the ball forward to facilitate attacking runs but Paredes can do all that and also create several chances.

According to Squawka, the youngster has created 14 chances in 7 Europa League appearances for the club which is quite impressive for a defensive-minded midfielder.

In addition to that, Paredes is also a free-kick specialist and he could add a new dimension to United’s attack. The club have been crying out for a player to partner Matic; somebody who can truly make a difference in the middle of the park while providing a creative outlet as well. Paredes ticks all the boxes.

Thus, given his skills and potential, the Red Devils can definitely benefit from this transfer. However, it remains to be seen how well Paredes can adapt to the physicality and demanding nature of the Premier League.
