Wilder signing this solid Blackburn star would make United’s backline worthy of handling the Premier League

Sheffield United opinion: The Blades should go for Darragh Lenihan

According to Lancashire Telegraph, Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder is planning to sign Blackburn Rovers defender Darragh Lenihan after he tried and failed to lure him to Bramall Lane back in 2017.

The Republic of Ireland international, 25, has been a hit at Ewood Park since nailing down a place in the Blackburn Rovers’ first-team after emerging from the club’s youth academy.

He was one of the standout performers for Rovers in the 2018/19 campaign, managing 34 Championship appearances under Tony Mowbray.

Unsurprisingly, Darragh Lenihan’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed, with newly-promoted Sheffield United keen to sign him this summer. The report claims Tony Mowbray is keen to keep hold of his star defender, who has played 126 games for Rovers so far.

Chris Wilder is keen to bring in new faces this summer ahead of Sheffield United’s return to the Premier League. While the Blades haven’t made any signings yet, they are expected to spend smartly this summer.

A top quality striker has to be on Wilder’s wishlist to compete and cover for the likes of Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick. Apart from that, the Blades boss should also look to reinforce his defence.

The likes of John Egan, Jack O’Connell and Chris Basham were solid in Wilder’s 3-back system, with wing-backs Enda Stevens and George Baldock also impressing.

But with United releasing some players, including centre-back Martin Cranie, Wilder needs to add depth to his squad, especially in defence. Thus, the interest in Darragh Lenihan is completely justified and the Blades chief should go all out to sign him.

Standing at 6ft 2in, Lenihan is a tough-tackling, no-nonsense defender who never hesitates to throw his body on the line. He is strong in the air and the defender seems to have well-rounded attributes.

Due to his physical attributes, the 25-year-old should be able to cope with the challenges of the Premier League.

On the technical front, he has confidence and composure on the ball. Lenihan’s abilities on the ball and reading of the game are impressive, and he often sticks tightly with his man as he tends to give no space for the opposition to breathe.

The two-cap Republic of Ireland international’s strength and power coupled with his tackling skills make him tailor-made for Wilder’s system at Bramall Lane.

Verdict

No wonder Wilder appears to be an admirer of Lenihan and he must look to bring the Dunboyne-born defender to Sheffield United this summer.
