“Wizardry”, “A touch of Brazilian magic”: Some Liverpool fans rejoice 3-1 win vs Newcastle + Match Report

Premier League Match Report: Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle United

Liverpool preserved their perfect record in the Premier League this season, as a first-half brace from Sadio Mane followed by a third goal from Mo Salah in the second half helped the Reds complete a 3-1 comeback victory over Newcastle United at Anfield on Saturday.

Having scored as many as 12 goals in their first four Premier League games before the international break, Liverpool came into the game as the outright favourites against Newcastle, who were hoping to pull off an yet another upset after beating Spurs at home in Round 3.

And when Jetro Willems’ pile driver rattled the back of Adrian’s net just 7 minutes into the game, the travelling fans would surely have hoped for another giant-killing feat to be on the cards.

However, as clinical as Jurgen Klopp’s side have over the past 12 months, the Reds completely dominated proceedings after going 1-0 down and it wasn’t long before that the hosts managed to restore parity.

Liverpool, though, could have had a chance to equalise a few minutes before Mane actually made it 1-1.

Jamaal Lascelles’ pull-back on Joel Matip inside the box was deemed unworthy of a penalty and VAR Mike Dean apparently found no conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field decision, although replays clearly showed that Lascelles had his arms wrapped around Matip.

Newcastle were, by and large, quite impermeable at the back but a moment of indecisiveness from Emil Krafth opened up space for Andrew Robertson, who laid it on for Mane to make it 1-1 with an emphatic finish into the top corner.

That equaliser opened the floodgates for the hosts to put Steve Bruce’s side under more pressure and they crumbled once again soon after.

Roberto Firmino, who came on for Divock Origi midway through the first half, pressed Christian Atsu off the ball in the midfield and unleashed just the perfect pass to set Mane clear through on goal.

Martin Dubravka seemed to be the favourite to cut it out but he made a complete mess of it in the end and literally gifted the Senegalese international his second goal of the game five minutes before the interval.

Newcastle showed more intent in the second half and they could have clawed their way back into the game, only for Emil Krafth to miss a guilt-edged chance from close range.

However, Liverpool continued to dictate terms and Dubravka made several key saves to keep the Magpies within striking distance, although their resistance finally came to an end in the 72nd minute when Mo Salah put the game to bed after latching on to a lovely crafted pass from Firmino.

Liverpool went five points clear of Man City at the top of the table with that 3-1 victory and the pressure will be on the Citizens to reduce the deficit to two when they face Norwich City away from home later in the day.
