Wolves exploiting Stoke’s financial situation to sign 29-year-old star would be a steal

Why Joe Allen would be a smart signing for Nuno’s Wolves

According to Wales Online, Wolves are one of the Premier League clubs listed as a potential destination for Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen. Wales Online report that the club registered losses of £30.1m during their final season in the Premier League back in 2018.

Stoke City players’ performances have not up to the mark this season as well and despite the arrival of Michael O’Neil, they look nowhere near capable of mounting the march back to the Premier League.

The Potters have been very poor this season, so they could resort to offloading their biggest stars in January, with Joe Allen likely to be sold, the report adds.

Wolves, meanwhile, stretched their unbeaten record to 11 Premier League matches after a 2-2 draw at Brighton on Sunday. After Brighton’s exploits in beating Arsenal earlier, the point looks a decent one for Wolves.

The Wanderers are sixth in the Premier League after Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Brighton and are well in the hunt for a European place once again. However, Nuno Espirito Santo must add a couple of players in January to boost his squad depth.

One area Nuno should prioritise addressing is the midfield. Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves played nearly every game alongside one another for Wolves last season and it’ll be difficult for Moutinho to continue performing at such a high level given his age.

Adding some proven competition for Moutinho, Neves, Leander Dendoncker and Romain Saiss in the midfield would certainly make sense.

In that regard, signing Joe Allen would make perfect sense. Allen can play in different positions across the midfield, something that should come handy for Nuno’s side.

As per WhoScored.com, the Wales international has registered 2.4 tackles, 1.8 interceptions, 0.8 clearances and 0.2 blocks per game. The tough-tackling midfielder has averaged 0.5 key passes, 34.1 short passes and 1.4 long balls, whilst attaining an 81.2% pass success rate in the Championship.

Verdict

Allen is a quality player with solid experience in the Premier League. He has the qualities to thrive at Wolves, hence, Nuno should go all out to land the 29-year-old in January to bolster his midfield department for the rest of the season.
