Wolves going all out to sign this top-class £30m-rated Leeds United star would be a dynamic transfer move

Wolves Opinion: Why Wolves should go all out to sign Kalvin Phillips?

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Wolves have entered the race to sign Leeds United star, Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips, 23, is one of the Championship’s best players and was named in the EFL Team of the Season along with team-mate Liam Cooper. He is a wanted man after a stunning campaign with Leeds, attracting interest from the likes of Aston Villa and Bournemouth as well.

The report claims that the Whites are holding out for around £30 million for their midfield ace. It is difficult to see Bournemouth and Aston Villa stumping up that much amount, especially the latter after already spending so much money following their promotion to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Wolves, backed by Chinese consortium Fosun international, have the financial might to meet Leeds’ valuation for Phillips.

Kalvin Phillips

Wolves enjoyed a fantastic return to the Premier League last year as they exceeded expectations and finished seventh in the table, whilst bagging a Europa League spot. With Nuno Espirito Santo’s men set to start their season two weeks before the others due to the Europa League qualifying games, adding more depth to the squad could just be the order of the day.

It’s important noting that Joao Moutinho is not getting any younger and will need replacing at some point in time. He was brilliant in his debut Premier League season but as he’ll turn 33 in September, the Portuguese may not be able to cope up with the potential duel demands of the Premier League and the Europa League.

And despite signing Leander Dendoncker permanently from Anderlecht this year following a solid loan spell, Nuno should bring in Kalvin Phillips this summer.

Phillips was excellent for Leeds and consistently produced the goods throughout the Championship season. Operating as a defensive midfielder, the 23-year-old used to orchestrate to attacks from the back with his impressive passing and reading of the game. He isn’t shy about going into challenges and is a perfect midfield disruptor.

To go with his passing and tackling abilities, the Englishman works tirelessly off the ball and covers every blade of grass to keep things ticking over for his team. Phillips has solid composure on the ball as well, and he would be an ideal player for Wolves, potentially forming a fantastic partnership with Ruben Neves at the heart of the midfield.

Verdict

Phillips is versatile, athletic and showcases fantastic work rate which are the primary ingredients Nuno looks for in a midfielder. Given all his qualities, the 23-year-old could seamlessly fit into Nuno’s system and help Wolves break into the top six next season.
