Why Wolves should plot a January swoop for Karlan Grant

According to a report from The Sun, Wolves are interested in signing Huddersfield Town striker Karlan Grant.

The striker, 22, only joined Huddersfield Town back in January in a £2million deal from Charlton Athletic, and with 11 goals in 19 appearances, Karlan Grant is one of the hottest strikers in the Championship.

He has played a starring role in the Terriers’ recent rejuvenation under Danny Cowley. With the 22-year-old currently impressing in the English second-tier, Wolves must make a move to sign him during the January transfer window.

Wolves moved back up to fifth place in the Premier League table on Wednesday evening with a deserved 2-0 win over West Ham at Molineux. The result meant the Wanderers made it 10 games unbeaten in the top-flight and they are now fifth in the table, two points above sixth-placed Manchester United.

The Midlands club are aiming to break into the top four this season, and with them competing in Europe as well, Nuno Espirito Santo should look to add a couple of players in January. Wolves are over-reliant on Raul Jimenez for goals, with the Mexican star netting 15 goals already across all competitions this season.

Jimenez is one of the most reliable and complete forwards in the Premier League, but he has lacked a bit of support from the likes of Jota and Patrick Cutrone.

Jota, who had an excellent 2018/19 season, has been in and out of the team this term, while Cutrone is yet to settle in English football. Thus, Nuno should look forward to signing a striker in January and Karlan Grant would be a good fit at the Molineux.

More Wolves News

Grant is a natural striker who comes alive in the box. According to WhoScored.com, the 22-year-old has an average of 2.2 shots, 1.4 key passes and a pass success rate of 74%.

He will only get better with age as he would get a lot of playing time at Wolves. The former Charlton man could be deployed alongside Jimenez up front, and there might be chances for him to be the difference in the team.

Verdict

The addition of Grant to the Wolves squad in January would help them push for a place in the top four. At the age of 22, the striker has massive potential and could truly unlock it under an astute tactician like Nuno Espirito Santo.

Experienced heads: welcoming the return of three veteran managers to English football

The first three months of 2023 saw Mick McCarthy, Neil Warnock, and, most recently, Roy Hodgson be re-instated in the managerial world, with the latter two coming out of retirement for their respective posts.

With that in mind, here is a closer look at three men who remain the oldest managers in English football.

Roy Hodgson – Crystal Palace (appointed 21 March)

Roy Hodgson returned to Crystal Palace in March, nearly two years after his last tenure in south London. It was the second time Hodgson had come out of retirement to take on a new role, after failing to keep Watford up in the 2021-22 campaign.

Hodgson is the most travelled manager on this list, with a career going back to 1976 and covering eight different countries.

His spell as Three Lions boss wasn’t filled with success and he will always be associated with the infamous defeat to Iceland, as covered by the BBC at the time, but Hodgson will be fondly remembered around some English football circles for reaching the Europa League final with Fulham in 2009-10, before defeat to Atletico Madrid.

He is yet to lead a team out in the Champions League, though, which is Europe’s elite competition and has become so famous it features on various platforms or has been imitated due to its popularity.

These include video games such as FIFA and online slots, where sites such as  provides offers such as free spins to new users as well as a range of titles to attract a wide demographic. The Champions League is only likely to continue growing across different entertainment platforms as it has cemented itself as the premier competition in domestic football.

Far from Europe, meanwhile, Hodgson now faces a tough battle with Palace to try and avoid a second successive relegation from the Premier League this term.

Neil Warnock – Huddersfield Town (appointed 13 February)

Neil Warnock had enjoyed less than a year out of football and had even set up a new podcast when he was dragged back into the action in February of this year.

The veteran Englishman returned to Huddersfield Town where he had won promotion in his spell between 1993 and 1995, to oversee their own fight for survival in the Championship in 2022-23, as reported by The Independent. Unlike Hodgson, Warnock has remained in England his entire career, which spans over 40 years.

Starting in the lower leagues, Warnock made his way through Plymouth, Oldham and Bury after his first stint at Huddersfield, before taking Sheffield United to the Premier League in his longest tenure to date, spanning eight years.

Alongside roles at Middlesbrough, Cardiff and Rotherham, arguably Warnock’s greatest achievement was winning the Championship with QPR back in 2010/11.

Mick McCarthy – Blackpool (appointed 19 January)

Born in Barnsley but going on to represent – and later manage – Ireland at the international level, Mick McCarthy became English football’s third-oldest manager after he was made Blackpool boss at the turn of the year. His career started at Millwall in 1992 but he soon found his calling in international management.

McCarthy took charge of Ireland in 1996 and remained for six years, famously taking the Boys in Green to only their third World Cup ever in 2002 and getting them to the last-16 before losing on penalties to Spain.

After long spells in charge of Sunderland, Wolves and Ipswich, McCarthy returned for a less successful spell as Ireland manager, before trying his luck in Cyprus with APOEL Nicosia. Now, his Blackpool side faces a head-to-head battle with Warnock’s Huddersfield to avoid the drop in the Championship.

The development of the modern game has seen a rebirth of football tactics and, with it, a new and exciting brand of up-and-coming football minds.

But one cannot put a price on experience as well as pure grit and determination, which has seen the return of some of football’s most storied tacticians. While they may represent a quick fix, the importance and influence of such managers cannot be downplayed.

Fulham would be quite wise to stay away from this 23-year-old Huddersfield outcast

Why Fulham should avoid signing Huddersfield winger Isaac Mbenza

According to French publication L’Equipe (h/t The Bournemouth Echo), Fulham are battling Bournemouth to sign Huddersfield Town winger Isaac Mbenza.

Isaac Mbenza, 23, joined Huddersfield Town on loan from Montpellier last season, featuring 22 times in the Yorkshire club’s failed attempt at avoiding relegation from the Premier League. He made his move to the Terriers permanent last summer.

The winger has made six appearances for Huddersfield Town this season but has featured just twice since Danny Cowley was appointed in September. His most recent outing came in a Championship win at Stoke City in October.

As far as Fulham are concerned, they are in good form, having won their three of their last five games in all competitions. The Cottagers saw off Middlesbrough 1-0 at Craven Cottage and drew 0-0 against Charlton before losing 4-0 to Man City in the FA Cup.

Michael Hector, Terrence Kongolo and Jordan Archer have all already arrived and with less than a week left for the January transfer window to slam shut, Scott Parker still has a chance to get in players. However, Fulham’s interest in Isaac Mbenza is baffling, to say the least.

Mbenza has never really adapted to the demands of English football since arriving from Ligue 1 in 2018. He was a proven goalscorer in France with Montpellier and came to England with the promise of having a similar impact.

But a move to Huddersfield hasn’t gone well for him. The winger has largely been an outcast at the John Smith’s Stadium, managing only a goal in 30 appearances.

Given that this is a player who has struggled to live up to the expectations at Huddersfield, Fulham would be better off not signing him. The Cottagers will miss Aleksandar Mitrovic for a handful of games due to an ankle injury he sustained against Hull City but Parker does have other options in the forward department to replace the Serb.

More News

In Bobby Reid, Aboubakar Kamara, Ivan Cavaleiro and Anthony Knockaert, Fulham have enough quality and competition in their attack for the rest of the campaign.

Verdict

A move away from Huddersfield is exactly what Mbenza needs in order to revitalise his faltering career. Nevertheless, Fulham must stay away from the winger.
