“World class”, “How has he done that!”: Some Newcastle fans on cloud nine after shock 2-1 win vs Man City + Match report

Newcastle 2-1 Man City: Rafa’s Magpies stun Pep’s Cityzens at St. James’ Park

Newcastle United produced the shock of the day when they come from behind to beat defending champions Manchester City 2-1 at St. James’ Park. Sergio Aguero scored the opening goal for the Cityzens after just 24 seconds, but the Magpies responded with two goals in the second half – one from Salomon Rondon and the winner from Matt Ritchie.

The visitors led half a minute into the game when David Silva was brave to head in the assist for Aguero with the goalkeeper lurking in. The Argentine then made no mistake to slot the ball into the back of the net.

Following that, Rafa Benitez’s men did well not to buckle and concede again. Instead, they defended astutely and didn’t go chasing at a one-goal deficit. A fantastic double-block on the goal-line stopped Silva from doubling the lead before the break.

City kept on probing in the second half without much thrust. Eventually, a chance arrived for Newcastle and they took it when Isaac Hayden, following an initial clearance from the defender, intelligently headed the ball back into the box for Rondon to chase and score.

The Magpies scored the second when Sean Longstaff did very well to press high and force Fernandinho into a mistake in the box. The Brazilian lost control of the ball and gave away a stonewall penalty.

Ritchie then stepped up to score eight minutes from time to send St. James’ Park into raptures. The home side held on at the end, much to the delight of the Geordies and Benitez. Pep Guardiola should be disappointed after a lacklustre display.

For the Magpies though, it is a wonderful night as they are now placed 14th in the table, five clear of safety.
